The much-anticipated Captain America: Brave New World has finally hit screens, and early Twitter reviews indicate a mix of praise and disappointment among fans of the franchise.
Starring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka Captain America and Harrison Ford as President Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, the film that had early previews in cinemas worldwide on Wednesday, has managed to woo some, while leaving others drawing comparisons to the decade-old Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan starrer ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’.
Going by the early fan and critics reactions, Some viewers have lauded the film for its engaging action sequences, compelling performances, and its politically charged narrative. “#CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld is thrillingly tactile and surprisingly leftist on a level that’s freaking sublime. Some of the best content/media of the year so far, the MCU cements its legacy as one of the most sauceful makers working today,” read a tweet.
Another said, “I didn’t expect to have so much fun with #CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld. Anthony Mackie is a fantastic lead & does a great job as Cap. Loved the dynamic between Sam & Torres, & the Isaiah Bradley scenes will break your heart.”
“#CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld is a big win for Marvel Studios! Sam Wilson is undeniably Captain America. He embodies everything needed to lead the Avengers. The action is great! The story is very close to the vibes of The Winter Soldier. Watch on the biggest screen possible,” another recommended.
However, not all reactions were glowing, with some fans pointing out issues and inconsistencies with reshoots, villains, and CGI. One viewer said, “#CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld both met & exceeded my low expectations. You can feel the reshoots throughout the film & the main villain was a big miss. But this is the most cohesive the MCU has felt since 2019. Sam has good chemistry w/ his partners & it can deliver the feels.”
Another pointed out that the ’emotional’ aspect of the Captain America franchise seemed amiss in this new film. “#CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld is an enjoyable watch with decent action sequences & some standout moments. However, it didn’t quite hit the emotional or narrative highs I was hoping for. Loved Mackie as Cap & I appreciated the more serious tone but it did feel slightly empty,” read the post.
Considering that this marks the first time Mackie’s Captain America takes centre stage, stans Evans’ Steve Rogers, some felt the absence of the super soldier, saying, “I hate to say this but #CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld was a big disappointment. Felt very empty & lacks the heart of a Captain America movie. The action is edited to death with thousands of cuts. The dialogue is very cheesy. Weird-looking green screens. Undercooked villains. Don’t expect a lot of Red Hulk either. This felt like it was supposed to be a Hulk movie that just shoehorned Sam as the lead.”
“#CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld is bad. Bad CGI, exposition dialogue, Red Hulk wasted, Sam can’t carry a movie. Just skip it and wait for Steve Rogers to come back with a new actor,” read a tweet.
Some other fans were reminded of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), which starred Evans’ Captain America alongside Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, and Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier. “#CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld is a big win for Marvel Studios! Sam Wilson is undeniably Captain America. He embodies everything needed to lead the Avengers. The action is great! The story is very close to the vibes of The Winter Soldier. Watch on the biggest screen possible,” read a post. The film, directed by the Russo Brothers, was a turning point for the franchise and marked Mackie’s debut as The Falcon. Since then, Mackie reprised the role in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, where Steve Rogers passed the shield to Sam Wilson.
Despite the mixed early reactions, ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ has sparked excitement among fans for the next phase of the MCU that will culminate with the events of Avengers: Secret Wars.
