AR Rahman recently talked about his 2009 meeting with Michael Jackson before his death. In a video posted by Free Malaysia Today, the music composer disclosed that the King of Pop nearly sang for Shankar‘s ‘Enthiran’ starring Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai. He was speaking to fans during a meet and greet on Monday in Malaysia.
Rahman revealed that early in 2009 while visiting Los Angeles, USA, he was introduced to someone who managed Michael.“I asked if I could meet him. An email was sent out but there was no response for a week. Then, I got nominated for the Oscars (for Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire). Michael’s team said he wanted to meet me. I said, I don’t want to meet him now. I’ll meet him when I’ve won an Oscar,” said the composer.
And he described his feelings as being at the ‘top of the world’ after winning the Oscar. Rahman further added “I met him at a home in LA the day after I won it. He was very kind, we spoke about music and world peace. He said, why don’t we do the next We Are The World, introduced me to his kids. He even showed me how he dances from the heart.”
He informed Shankar everything about his meeting with Michel as soon as he returned to India. The director questioned Rahman if he was going to be on board ‘Enthiran’. “Shankar sir asked me if he would sing for the film. I said, wow, will he sing a Tamil song? I asked. He said, whatever you say, we’ll do together.” Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be because Michael died in June that year. “He was sick at that time,” said Rahman.
While the OST of Enthiran featured no international singers, it went on to be a huge hit at the box office. In 2018, the movie’s sequel, 2.0, which also had Rahman’s music, was released. The film starred Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson.
On the work front, Rahman has numerous films lined up in multiple languages. He has ‘Moon Walk’, ‘Thug Life’, ‘Genie’, ‘Raayan’ and ‘Kadhalikka Neramillai’ in Tamil. He has ‘Ramayana’, ‘Tere Ishk Mein’, ‘Lahore 1947’ and ‘Chhava’ in Hindi. He also has Ram Charan’s next Telugu film with Buchi Babu Sana. He is even composing the soundtrack for the Arabic movie ‘Baab’.
